Hawkeyes Defeat GR Catholic Central In Come From Behind Effort

The Hawkeyes used a lot of grit and determination to overcome an early 7-2 deficit and record an 8-7 victory over Grand Rapids Catholic Central.  The visitors scored a run in the top of the first to go ahead 1-0.  Hamilton responded with a run of their own in the bottom of the first to tie it 1-1.  Elijah Walker hit a one out single, advanced to third on a double by Tommy Schreur, and then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ethan Buresh.  Catholic Central scored 3 more runs in the top of the 2nd to go ahead 4-1.  The Hawkeyes got one run back in the bottom of the second when Grant Wolfram led off with a walk, stole second, moved to third on a ground ball off the bat of Justin Overhiser, and scored on an infield error off the bat of Elijah Walker.  The Cougars again scored 3 runs in the third inning widening their leading margin to 7-2.  The score remained that way until the bottom of the 4th when the Hawkeyes scored 3 runs to cut the deficit to 7-5.  Walker got things started with an infield error.  Schreur followed him with a walk, and Ethan Buresh singled to load the bases.  Cole Carlson was then hit by a pitch to plate Walker.  Gerrit Eding ripped a single to score Schreur and Buresh.  In the top of the 5th with no outs and runners on 1st and 2nd base, Dylan Buresh entered the game as the Hawkeyes pitcher in relief of Brady Mudd.  In a clutch performance that kept the deficit at only 2 runs, Buresh induced a ground ball to third, a strikeout, and then after loading the bases with a walk, he got the third out on a fly ball to right field.  Hamilton closed the deficit to 7-6 by scoring one run in the bottom of the 5th.  Jared Overbeek singled, went to third on a single by Elijah Walker, and later scored on a wild pitch.  In the bottom of the 6th the Hawkeyes recorded the tying and go-ahead runs.  Justin Overhiser started things off with a one out walk.  He stole second and then took third and scored on a single and throwing error by a Catholic Central infielder off the bat of Overbeek.  Overbeek stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch, and then scored the winning run on a solid single off the bat of Schreur.  After an infield hit by the Cougars in the top of the seventh, Dylan Buresh got a ground ball to Shortstop Elijah Walker who forced the runner out at second base.  Buresh then picked off the runner at first base to record the second out of the inning.  The final out was recorded on another ground ball to shortstop.  The Hawkeyes are now 9-7 on the season.  The team will travel to Unity Christian for an OK Green doubleheader on Tuesday, May 14.
