The 2013 Varsity Baseball Team began its season on Saturday, April 6 with two wins at Coldwater. In game one, Grant Wolfram got the start and pitched 6 solid innings for the win. He allowed only one run on 3 hits while striking out 8 and walking 4. The team scored a run each in the 1st and 2nd innings to get off to a great start. Tommy Schreur scored the Hawkeyes first run of 2013. He singled with two outs, Ethan Buresh followed with a single, and then Schreur scored on an error by the left-fielder off the bat of Wolfram. Shawn Thompson got things started in the second inning with a solid single. He stole second and then scored on a two-out single by Elijah Walker. Both pitchers settled in and the score remained 2-0 until the top of the 6th when the Hawkeyes exploded for 4 runs on 5 straight hits. Walker, Cole Carlson, Schreur, and Wolfram all singled while the big hit was a two-RBI triple by Ethan Buresh. Coldwater responded with one run in the 6th and two in the seventh, but the Hawkeyes held on for a 6-3 win.

In the second game the Hawkeyes again struck early with 5 runs in the first two innings. Walker had a single and a triple in those two innings and scored two runs. Buresh and Wolfram each had doubles in the second inning to drive in a run each. Ypsilanti Lincoln scored one run in the second, two in the third and one more in the 4th to make it a slim 5-4 lead for Hamilton, but the Hawkeyes responded with 2 runs in the 5th and 3 more in the 6th to make the final score 10-4. Walker had an RBI single in the 5th and Gerrit Eding batted in two runs with a double in the 6th. Hamilton got shut-out innings by Heath Dannenberg in the 5th, Brady Mudd in the 6th, and Hayden Smith in the 7th. Ethan Buresh got the win pitching 3 innings and recording 5 K’s and 2 BB’s.  Offensively the Hawkeyes were led by Elijah Walker’s 6-9 effort from the plate and Ethan Buresh’s 4-7 with two doubles and a triple.
