Phillips Pitches No-Hitter. Keeps Team In First Place.

Keith Phillips pitched a gem on Tuesday night as the Hawkeyes defeated Unity Christian 18-0.  Phillips recorded his first Varsity no-hitter as he struck out 14 and walked 2 batters.  The game lowered his ERA to 1.31 on the season.  He also lowered his WHIP (Walks and hits per inning pitched) to .97 on the year as he has only allowed 28 hits in 48 innings pitched.  The score was really not as lopsided as it seems.  In the first inning the Hawkeyes jumped out to a 3-0 lead as Brandon George reached on a single, Phillips reached on an error by the left-fielder, and then VanHeest knocked in both George and Phillips with his first of four doubles on the night.  After Joey DeGood reached base on an error by the third baseman, Brandon Dorn hit a sacrifice fly to score Andrew Stehle (Courtesy runner for VanHeest).  The second and fourth innings were frustrating ones for the Hawkeyes.  In the second, the first two batters would reach base but would not score.  On an attempted steal of third base by Will Braschler, Brandon George ripped a line drive to the Centerfielder who caught it and returned it to second base for the double play.  In the fourth inning the Hawkeyes would load the bases with one out and again would come up empty.  Phillips ripped a line drive to the first baseman who caught it and stepped on first for the inning ending double play.  Finally the team would break the game open a little bit in the fifth inning.  Tommy Schreur led off the inning with a walk.  VanHeest hit his second double of the night to put runners on 2nd and 3rd.  DeGood singled home Schreur to put runners on 1st and 3rd.  Dorn hit a single of his own to drive in Stehle and put runners at the corners again.  Daniel George finished the scoring for the inning by lifting a sacrifice fly to centerfield to score DeGood.  The Hawkeyes would add one more insurance run in the 6th on a single by Schreur, a wild pitch to advance him to second, and then VanHeest’s third double of the night to score Schreur.  Although Phillips had all the runs that he would need, the Hawkeyes decided to end the game with a bang.  The team plated 11 runs in the top of the 7th.  Phillips (3B, 3 RBI’s), VanHeest (2B, 1 RBI), Ethan Buresh (1B), Justin Genther (2B, 2 RBI’s), Chris Scholten (1B, 1 RBI), and Andrew Stehle (1B, 2 RBI’s) would all have key hits in the inning.  Phillips ended the game by setting down the Crusaders in order in the 7th inning and striking out two of the three batters that he faced.  The team’s record is now 21-4 and 10-2 in the OK Green Conference (1st Place).  The next game is Friday at home against Zeeland West in a double-header slated to begin at 4:00 pm.
